Hi guys, one of my favorite Photoshop plugins is Portraiture. It’s a Photoshop plugin that smooths the models skin. I use it sparingly but it really comes in handy when you’re shooting a model with less than perfect skin. Here’s a tutorial on how I use Portraiture in my workflow.

Download it here: http://proglamour.com/content/portraiture.zip

The plugin is available from Imagenomic and if you want to save 20%, use this coupon code: DEANCAPTURE.

Photoshop - Get To Know It!

Photoshop - Get To Know It!

Hey guys, hope you are doing well. If you don’t hear from me for a while, it’s just because I’m busy. I do run a full-time photography business here in LA and sometimes I get busy and can’t post as much as I like. Bare with me : P

Hey, one thing I’ve been doing a lot lately too is really studying up on Photoshop. I’m totally convinced that our success as photographers “really” has a lot to do with the depth of knowledge that we have with Photoshop. Unless you have nice budgets to hire Photoshop gurus to do your post work, you need to get with the program and figure out how to process your work to take it to a professional level.

When you pass by a magazine stand, take a glance at all those beautiful covers. Every one of those shots have been worked on in Photoshop – all of them. Some of those were worked on by real Photoshop gurus but many of them were worked on by the photographers who shot them.

Photographers Assistant :::

Photographers Assistant!

Assisting Photographers is one of the best ways to learn the craft. I was lucky enough to work as an assistant to several great shooters over the years. Starting back in Memphis where I got my start and then eventually here in LA after I moved here in 99′.

One of the great things about assisting different shooters is that they all have their own way of doing things. Being able to work with a variety of Photographers enables you to see different ways that Photographers work. You learn a bit from this guy and a bit from that guy. It’s all these great variations of influences that helps to mold you into the kind of shooter that you eventually become. You take the knowledge that you learned from these various assistant jobs and you mix that with knowledge that you’ve garnered from reading books, watching videos on the net, attending workshops & seminars and skills that you’ve developed from practicing and experimenting. Eventually, through years of practice, study and development, you become a shooter with a unique style that separates you from some of the others.

My advice to anyone wanting to learn more is to consider assisting someone who knows more than you do. They don’t have to be great shooters, they don’t have to be successful shooters. As long as you think that they know more than you do – that’s all that’s required. Offer to assist for free and if you get the call, change whatever plans you have to go assist that Photographer. If you’re not willing to give up a little bit of yourself to learn more – you don’t want it bad enough!

Learning To See and Feel The Light!

Learning To Feel The Light!

Learning To Feel The Light!

When I first started learning to light portraits, I could only shoot in a darkened room. I had gotten used to shooting this way. Blocking out all of the light so that I can “see” how my modeling light was lighting up my subject. This is how we all start learning to shoot and learning to “see” light.

In the real world, you don’t always have the option to block out all the lighting and shoot in a darkened environment. In my world, I almost never have this option. We rent mansions here in Los Angeles to shoot in and 99% of them have HUGE beautiful windows that allow natural light to pour in. This would present a challenge to those who only have experience shooting in darkened environments by forcing them to feel their light rather than see their light. read more…
